WOD Guidance:
After World War II, cocoa was extremely scarce in Europe, and what little chocolate there was was expensive and hard to come by. In Italy in 1946 the owner of a small bakery found that he could combine hazelnuts, sugar, and spices to form an effective chocolate substitute. He called this food product Nutella, and it’s still enjoyed by large chunks of the world to this day. The Devil’s Press first appeared in a Wodapalooza qualifying workout in 2019, but in it’s original double dumbbell form it was more or less exclusively suited to competitive CrossFitters with highly developed muscles in their lower backs. Then came the quarantines and lockdowns of 2020, and gyms were forced to program virtual workouts for athletes working with very little equipment at their houses. Enter the Single Arm Devil’s Press. Changing the movement from a double dumbbell to a single dumbbell movement made it more accessible for the everyday CrossFitter, while preserving the same level of intensity and making it the perfect fit for people who were limited both in terms of space and equipment. This movement will continue to be a mainstay in CrossFit workouts, and it all came out of coaches needing to be creative in a time of crisis. Today, break up the toes to bar into small sets, pace out the runs, and enjoy the CrossFit equivalent of Nutella!
